Insurance Disclosure
US market disclosure. This page explains, plainly, what Carvia's protection program is, what it isn't, and — most importantly right now — what's still pending. We'd rather tell you the truth about where things stand than paper over it with vague language.
1. Where things stand today
Carvia does not yet have a signed agreement with a licensed insurance carrier. `[PENDING CARRIER]`
Everything on this page describes our target program design — the structure we intend to launch with once a carrier relationship is finalized. Until then:
- Third-party liability coverage amounts referenced elsewhere on Carvia (e.g., in Protection Plans Terms) are not yet active.
- The damage-responsibility caps described for hosts and guests reflect Carvia's own marketplace-funded commitment, not an insurance carrier's underwriting — meaning Carvia itself is on the hook for administering and paying claims within those caps today, ahead of a carrier being in place.
- Hosts and guests should not assume Carvia's protection program currently replaces the liability coverage a personal auto policy, commercial policy, or state financial-responsibility law may require.
We'll update this page, email every user, and give the notice periods described in our Terms of Service the moment a carrier agreement is signed and coverage becomes active. Until that point, treat every liability figure on Carvia as a stated goal, not a current guarantee.
2. What Carvia's protection program covers today (marketplace-funded, not carrier-backed)
- Damage responsibility caps: each host's earnings plan (Max Protection / Balanced / Max Earnings) sets a cap on how much of a covered damage claim comes out of the host's pocket — $250 / $1,250 / $2,500 respectively — with Carvia covering the rest of a covered claim's repair cost out of protection-plan revenue and marketplace funds.
- Guest damage responsibility caps: each guest's protection plan (Basic / Standard / Premium) similarly caps what a guest owes if found at fault — $3,000 / $1,000 / $250 respectively.
- Claims process and evidence rule: described in full in Protection Plans Terms.
3. What isn't covered by Carvia's program right now
- Third-party bodily injury or property damage liability beyond what's noted above — until a carrier is in place, this is a gap. Hosts and guests are strongly encouraged to carry their own personal auto insurance that extends to peer-to-peer rental use, or a commercial policy if applicable, until Carvia's carrier-backed liability coverage is active.
- Mechanical breakdowns unrelated to a trip incident.
- Damage from a prohibited use — see Prohibited Uses Policy.
- Anything outside the trip's authorized dates, times, or drivers.
4. What we're telling hosts specifically
If your personal auto policy has a "rental use" or "commercial use" exclusion, listing your car on Carvia could affect your coverage under that policy — this varies by insurer and state. Check with your insurance agent before listing. Carvia's own protection program (Section 2 above) applies to damage during an active, in-app-documented trip, but does not currently include carrier-backed liability protection for third parties.
5. What we're telling guests specifically
Your personal auto policy may or may not extend to a peer-to-peer rental — check with your insurer. Until Carvia's carrier relationship is active, the protection plan you select at checkout caps your damage responsibility to Carvia/the host (Section 2), but does not currently include carrier-backed third-party liability coverage. If you're in an accident, you're responsible for complying with your state's financial-responsibility/insurance requirements.
6. State-specific requirements
Insurance requirements for peer-to-peer car sharing vary by state, and some states have specific p2p car-sharing statutes. `[PENDING: state-by-state legal review once carrier and launch states are confirmed]` This section will be built out with state-specific disclosures before public launch.
7. Questions
If you have questions about coverage before booking or listing, email support@carvia.app. If you're unsure whether your personal policy covers you, talk to your insurance agent — we're not able to give insurance advice on your specific policy.
