Adding an Additional Driver

If someone besides you will be behind the wheel during your trip, add them as a driver before they drive — it's quick, and it's the only way their driving is covered.

Why it matters

Carvia's protection program covers the trip based on who's authorized to drive. If someone who isn't listed on the trip gets behind the wheel, that's an unauthorized driver under our Prohibited Uses policy — and it voids protection coverage for that trip. That's true even if the person is a spouse, partner, or close friend. If it's not on the trip, it's not covered.

How to add an additional driver

1. Open your trip in the Carvia app — you can do this while booking or any time before your trip starts.

2. Go to Trip Details > Drivers.

3. Enter the additional driver's name and email or phone number.

4. The additional driver gets a prompt to verify their own account: driver's license upload, selfie match, and the same driving-history check every Carvia guest goes through. See Creating Your Account and Verification.

5. Once they're verified, they're added to the trip and covered under your protection plan alongside you.

An additional driver needs to complete their own verification — you can't verify on their behalf. If they're not verified before the trip starts, they shouldn't drive until that's done.

A few things to know

  • There's no separate fee to add a driver. Your protection plan cost doesn't change based on how many authorized drivers are on the trip.
  • Age requirements still apply. An additional driver has to meet the same minimum age and licensing requirements as any guest — 21+ standard, or 18-20 with Premium protection and extended verification on the trip.
  • You can add a driver after booking, but do it before they drive. If your plans change and someone new needs to take the wheel mid-trip, add them in-app as soon as you know — don't wait until they're already driving.
  • Removing a driver works the same way, from the same Drivers screen, any time before the trip ends.

What happens if an unauthorized person drives

If damage or an incident occurs while an unauthorized driver was behind the wheel, that trip's protection coverage doesn't apply, and the responsibility for any damage falls outside the caps described in Choosing a Protection Plan (Guest). It's a strict rule, but it's a simple one to stay ahead of — if anyone else might drive, add them before the trip starts.
